Skipper Academy

SailWeek Skipper Academy offers an intensive one- or two-week training course for beginners and advanced/certified skippers. After finishing the academy, an individual can start a new career and become a SailWeek skipper.

Which opportunities will I have after successfully finishing SWC Academy?

Minimum four weeks of work for SailWeek
Earn from 450 to 940€ per week plus tip *

Payment plan:  3 instalments

Requirements
  • Assumed knowledge: none or basic
  • License: No license required
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Language skills: Fluent in English
  • Minimum duration: 14 days (two separate weeks)

Evaluation
During the week we will be monitoring your behavior patterns, work ethic, attitude and people skills, not only how you handle the boat.

After finishing the week-long training your knowledge and skills will be evaluated by one of our sailing instructors.

Note: To maintain objectivity, the sailing instructor who evaluates your skills and knowledge is not the instructor who guided you through the academy program.
The Goal/Outcome
Our Goal is to turn you into a professional and well trained skipper. Not only with the ability the maneuver and sail a boat with great communication skills and confidence in your skipper skills.

We are certain that the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Skipper a boat by day in coastal regions
  • Know how to dock a boat
  • Know how to anchor a boat
  • Skipper a boat under sails
  • Fix minor mechanical problems
  • Use VHF radio
GET CERTIFIED
To work as a SailWeek skipper you need to obtain an international license and after this course you will be ready to do so.

You can either:

  1. Take the test in your own country
  2. Take the test in Croatia through our partner

After successfully finishing SailWeek Academy you will be ready to apply for any of the approved international licence tests listed here.

Requirements
  • To attend this course you have to have one of the internationally recognised sailing qualifications.
    This is not a beginners course! You should be comfortable handling a yacht in any weather condition.

  • Assumed knowledge: One of the above licences is required to attend Advanced SailWeek Academy course
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Language skills: Fluent in English
  • Minimum duration: 7 days

During this Advanced course we want to make you from leisure skipper into a professional skipper, turning your weaknesses into your strengths. You will gain experience needed to work in the nautical industry through more complex navigation exercises.

Our Goal is to turn you into a professional and well trained skipper. Not only with the ability the maneuver and sail a boat but also have great communication with guests and be confident in yourselves and your ability as a skipper.

We are certain by the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Skipper a boat by in coastal regions of Mediterranean, Baltic or non-tidal waters
  • Handle a boat in all weather conditions
  • Sail a boat at a high standard

Catamaran Course

Sail & Work

For the candidates who successfully finish SailWeek Skipper Academy we promise at least four weeks of work for SailWeek. During those weeks you'll get the opportunity to show us everything you learned through the Academy. 
After that, based on the demand and overall skills, you'll may get offered more work from SailWeek.
Skippers operate as freelance contractors and can accept or reject any work we offer.
  • Minimum 4 weeks of work for SailWeek
  • All living expenses paid while working
  • Earn up to €940 + tip per week
  • Sailing yachts from 40 to 64 feet

We guarantee 4 weeks of work with SailWeek after you successfully finish the course.
Please note:
  • Not all the four working weeks are guaranteed to be in the same year, this depends on the booking situation
  • Based on the demand and overall skills, you may get offered more work from SailWeek
  • Skippers operate as freelance contractors and can accept or reject any work we offer
  • If the skipper is not performing up to standards, we reserve the right to end the working agreement
